When people find out your a gear-head they usually ask, “Well, if you could have any car which would it be?” I never really have a good answer. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a personal halo car. You know, that one car that you’ve always wanted and always will and would buy as soon as you won the lottery. My dream garage is constantly changing, and I can’t think of a single car that I’ve regularly had in said garage. Any other Opponauts like me? Or do you all have a halo car? If you do have one post a picture of it.
If I had to pick one I think I’d pick a Shelby Daytona, but if I actually had the money to afford one I’m still not sure that’s what I’d buy.
Daytona for your time

My single car of choice is easy - my ‘67 GTO.
Like you, the rest of the garage is always changing. The newest Corvette always has my eye, a wide assortment of muscle cars, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, and obvious choices like an 037 Stradale come and go all the time.
But the GTO was special. It’s the one car I’ve never removed from the garage. Why? I don’t really know. Something about the car just appeals to me. The understated looks, the torquey 400, and the general legacy of the car all just feel right.
All that being said, the choice to pick one up was the easiest one I’ve ever made.

With a halo car like this - my aspirations are terrible. But it means I won’t be disappointed. Who cares anyway, it’s my signature car after all.

Any particular reason? Because it’s the car that brought cars to the masses? Some sentimental reason? I can’t imagine it’s for its design...though as an engineer I can appreciate the “put a box on wheels” simplicity of it

I don’t really have one, I’d like a Viper and have considered buying one a time or two, but there are other cars/trucks that I’d love to have to. I did buy my Charger when I was 15 though, so if I didn’t have that I might be more inclined to have an old muscle car in the dream garage. I’ve been watching Dirt Everyday lately, and it’s reminded me there are a lot of cool old trucks out there.

Aston Martin DBS
At least, that’s my answer to the whole “if you could only have ONE car for the rest of your life and drive nothing else...” scenario. If the problem is less-clearly bounded, the answer gets more complicated :P

NOT FOR THE DESIGN?!
I actually pulled into a gas station (half a tank sort of counts as needing gas, right?) because I saw one parked at the pump this morning. It was nice to chat up the owner, who was more than willing to talk shop, but I digress.
I just think they’re beautiful cars, especially in black. I also like tinkering, the engineering in early electromechanical systems, and utilitarian transportation. It just checks all of the boxes for me. Those laced wheels are just the icing on the cake...

If I had to pick only one car, my answer is always McLaren F1, and this is coming from a huge Ferrari Fanboy. I think its one of the best cars ever made. However, if the question is opened up to more than 1 car, my dream garage is always evolving.
Also, my realistic halo car is a third gen Camaro IROC-Z. It was the car of my childhood, my bedroom wall poster, that sort of thing. And they go for around $5k these days, so once I get a house and settled, I think an IROC will show up in my garage sooner rather than later. It will be a 90-92, hard top, manual trans. Debating on whether I want Red or Blue. It’s getting gutted, caged, a whole bunch of suspension goodies thrown at it, and a built LS motor and gearbox.

I’ve always really wanted an El Camino. I just think they’re so cool. Every once and a while I look for one. But they’re either built out muscle cars for 20k, or clap traps for 3k. I just want a “normal” one. Plus I’m getting to the point in my life where it would be fairly impractic..... fuck it, off to craigslist again.

That’s my cousins dream car too. And he keeps being tempted to buy one, they are right around the price where it’s not quite within his reach, but almost.

My dream garage mostly consists of many different project cars I’d like to build but if I was asked to choose one non-project dream car I’d probably say Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV (w/o sideskirts, white or black with beige interior).

Once R33s start being imported in a few years, R32 prices *should* fall. I have modest goals, because I plan on attaining them.

I have a different halo car at every age. As a little kid it was this:
Bad guys from Condorman:
In Highschool. (I was really into Rockabilly)
In my 20's I wanted a Landcruiser. I’m in my 30's now, but I finally got it.
Then I refocused on when I was a kid... and found it, bought it, worked on it and now I drive it.
I guess if I had a halo car it would be something strange, like this:
The beast of Turin.

I always can’t stand this question. I would have a hard time narrowing it down to 10. Usually I just say Lancia 037 and then they have to look it up, giving me time to think of a way to change the subject.
![]() 06/30/2016 at 16:49 |

That’s though, ether an F40 or R34 gtr. I know everyone who’s seen F&F will say the same for the R34 but I always raced it in every racing game I had (Sega gt 2002 and even Forza) and it was the car as a kid that helped me get hooked. The F40 though is in my eyes the pinnacle of cars. First Street car to hit 200mph and the classic 80s wallposter look and part of the group that started supercars.

After having spent some time in one with an LS1 swap..... Torque mmmmm
![]() 06/30/2016 at 16:53 |

Ok sure, the LS motors are good, but if I wanted a 2-door sports car with an LS motor I’d get a Corvette. I’m not going to sit here and say that LS swapping an RX-7 is sacrilege, but for me, I’d rather do the three-rotor swap.

I know there must be a gazillion people who will say the same, McLaren F1, every time.
However, it used to be a Shelby Cobra 427, and on occasion I’ll say ‘59 Cadillac, or Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, or Duesenberg Speedster SJ, or...
damn it. I’m not so consistent as I thought.

Jup, they’re just as rare here in Europe. There tends to be a few for sale but there hasn’t been any in the roads in a long while.

Thought it was just a head gasket. Got it off to find the previous owner used some gunk to hide it instead of replacing it. The entire block was etched, 1 cyl bore was f’d. Full rebuild.

Yeah I get that occasionally, and I'm more of a 'dozen £1500 cars' than 'one £18000 car', and that logic just scales with the price...
